Wow! I just saw a video about weight loss using cardio vs. weights and what it said was so true. Here is the link in case you are interested.
I feel so bad for myself for all the cardio I did in the past. It seems so pointless. Some of the main points are:
1) The muscles you workout while doing cardio are not your large muscles so you are working out parts of your body that do not require much energy so you have to run for a long time to burn an amount of calories that will lead to significant weight loss. Think about the difference in the way a marathon runner looks versus a bodybuilder.
2) You have to spend much less time in the gym lifting weights than you do on the treadmill because it is more efficient.
3) Muscles keep burning fat more efficiently even when you are not in the gym. This is called Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC for short.
4) Working out your larger muscles directly burns your fat not the carbs you consumed that day.
5) While cardio generally only helps your lose fat, weight training will make you lose fat AND gain muscle. The larger your muscles, the more calories you burn just by doing your everyday tasks.
6) Weight training promote eating food because you need it to build weight whereas you may have to cut calories to lose weight if you do cardio.
The answer is easy... Weight train!! (and do cardio because it is good for your heart and for building endurance)
In my personal opinion, weight training is so much easier than doing long rounds of cardio on the treadmill. my muscles feel sore and I know I got a good workout in without having to suffer through staring at the same tv screen day in and day out. Weight training is a lot more versatile so you are not as easily bored. You can also build the body shape you want via weight training as opposed to simply doing cardio.
Ok guys good luck with everything and I hope this convinces you to weight train and eat!
